Introduction
The frame holds a portrait of S.E. Shirley Esq., the founder of the Kennel Club. It is a late 19th-century composition swept frame, finished with oil gilding.
Condition Before Treatment
The frame had minor losses to the gesso layer, and ingrained dirt was present on all four members. The back featured old brown gummed tape and accretions throughout.
Treatment
Losses were filled with gesso putty, then water gilded and toned to match the surrounding surface. The surface was cleaned using tri-ammonium citrate in deionised water. The old tape on the back was removed, and new felt and brown gummed tape were applied to receive the painting.
