Majolica Project
Category: Stone

Introduction
This project was carried out by DBR Conservation. I was part of a team of four conservators working on three arches, focusing on the majolica decoration. The objective was to clean the tiles and spandrels, followed by consolidation to prevent further flaking of the glaze covering the terracotta.
Condition Before Treatment
The majolica tiles and spandrels were flaking in several areas. The first step was to clean the surface of heavy dust build-up and remove stains left by a previous consolidation treatment.
Treatment
A solution of deionised water and methylated spirit was used to remove surface dust, while acetone was applied to clean stains from a previous consolidation treatment. Primal WS24 in deionised water was used to consolidate the flaking glaze.
